Last week DC Direct released the next bust in their Women of the DC Universe series, Batwoman. Batwoman is a fairly new character in DC Comics, and as far as I know this is only the second collectible of her (they made an action figure a while back from the 52 comics series). Here’s my review of the new bust with some photos.
Batwoman is in scale with the rest of the pieces in the Women of DC series and measures about 5 3/4″ tall, from the bottom of her base to the top of her batarang. She’s posed with her right arm back, ready to hurl the batarang, which is a good choice of positioning, but I think her back is arched a little too much. Or maybe she’s just leaning. Whatever the case, when viewed from certain angles, Batwoman looks like she’s leaning too far back in relation to the base. This is especially apparent from her left side (the side facing her face).
At first glance, everything looked fine about the bust’s paintjob, but after examining it closer and looking at some of the photos I took and then discarded, I found the paints to be a bit uneven and rough, especially on her mask where you can see some graininess in the black finish. The application to her hair and where her hair meets her skin also is a bit sloppy. I’ve heard of other people having the hair-meets-skin paint issues on some of the previous busts in this series, but this is the first one I’ve personally had like that.
The best part of the bust has to be the base. It’s a wicked gargoyle with its tongue hanging out, perfect for a denizen of Gotham. The paints on the base give it a kind of tarnished look, which really works here.
Overall I’m a bit disappointed with the Batwoman bust. She retails for $55, which isn’t super expensive on the statue scale, but 55 bucks is 55 bucks, and you really should get a little more quality than this for your hard earned money, especially given how great some of the recent busts have been (Starfire, etc). I hold out hope for the next release in the series, Wonder Girl, due out in July.
